Dr. Sherin Hussien

I am a Registered Social Worker with 20+ years of experience. Prior to private practice, I worked with many different community service organizations and universities (wearing many different hats at each) providing direct mental health services and education to adults within the newcomer and refugee populations. I took the leap into private practice to further deepen my work within this population as it is a true passion of mine. I hold a deep desire to nurture others and hold space for them during their current life successes and challenges. I am incredibly passionate about assisting in the building of a solid foundation to help other parents, newcomers, and refugees in the settlement and integration process. I am proud to boast a number of certifications and degrees that allow me to serve you as best I can. I am currently certified in: Mental Health First Aid from the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Cultural Competence Education from Cultural Competence TTT Sick Kids, Certified Triple P Facilitator Certified ‘Strengthen Families Facilitator,’ Certified as both a Community Interpreter and Medical Interpreter, Certified (M3)- Making Mindfulness Matter Facilitator, Certified Gender Intelligence Life Coach with Mars Venus Coaching Institute with Dr. John Gray. I am trained in Level 1 and 2 in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), while actively working towards my certification. I obtained my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Windsor. Additionally, I have also completed a Bachelor of Physical Education from Alexandria University, a Master in Physical Education (Sociology of Sport) from Alexandria University, a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Alexandria University, and lastly earned my Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Western. Outside my career endeavors, I love spending time with my partner and two adult children. One of my biggest joys is watching and supporting my children as they are becoming parents themselves, especially as the additional title they have given me as a grandparent is my favorite so far.

My Therapeutic Approach

Building a therapeutic relationship where you feel seen, heard, valued, and trusted is at the core of all the work we will do together. The human experience is all about connection, the best healing and transformative work comes from connection.
We will build a road map of where life has all taken you until this point and develop a goal-centered portion of the map to expand on where you’re wanting to go, explore and accomplish next.
I use a trauma-informed, person-centered, anti-oppressive lens in practice, and tailor my approach to each individual. As my approach comes from the biological, social, emotional, psychological, and spiritual lens which adapts to the individual I am directly working with. I draw from various therapeutic modalities, including some of the following:

  • Relational Cultural Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Solution Focused Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Areas of Specialization

I am a trauma informed therapist, and work primarily with individuals who are newcomers and refugees in settlement factors (including those specific to International Students and their experience), on a wide variety of issues, including the following:

      • Anxiety
      • Relationship challenges and problems (ex. marriage counseling)
      • Self-esteem and identity challenges

Community Involvement

I was a part of all these projects and programs as an advisor and consultant.

FAMILY HONOUR PROJECT, this project aims to interrupt so-called “honor-related” violence in families who come from collectivist cultures within the London community and beyond by improving services and responses necessary to keep victims safe.

RECLAIM HONOUR, Reclaim Honor is an engagement and awareness project funded by Status of Women Canada that works to promote honor and prevent violence against girls and women through the support of the community.

SHARED JOURNEYS PROJECT, I have partnered with the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI) with other service providers and diverse communities to share our experiences and lessons learned from the various service models that we have developed in London, Ontario, Canada.

FAMILY SAFETY PROGRAM looks to ensure the safety of families in crisis situations. In working with local organizations like the London Police Service and Children’s Aid Society, we have prevented family violence and significantly reduced the number of Muslim and Arab children in foster care.
